I’d have to say Richard Branson… His outlook and creativity is outstanding … He encourages others to do well and shares the benefits with his workforce…
I can’t say I have a single idol. There’s lots of people I look up to in different parts of my life. As a young teenager, the swimmer Aleksandr Popov was a very big idol of mine, he was afraid of water when his father made him go have swimming lessons and now he is still the only swimmer to win four individual freestyle Olympic gold medals. He taught me that just because something is scary or hard, doesn’t mean that you can’t succeed at it, if you put your mind to it and work very hard at it.
Scientifically speaking, my idols have been Nikola Tesla and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, both outstanding scientists and engineers who’s entire aim was to find innovative solutions to long-standing engineering problems.
Tesla – gave us AC power, amongst many inventions while Brunel revolutionised trainlines and navel engineering by setting the standard for a well-built railway, and building building steam-powered iron-hulled ships.
To see a problem and find a better more effective way to a solution is very much the way I approach my research.
