I am working on a few projects with my students. One of is about making a small robotic finger that a doctor can teleoperate while using it to diagnose problems (abnormalities) on tissue during an examination of patients. The challenging part is to add a feature on this system so that the doctor can feel what the robotic finger ‘feels’ – this is called haptic feedback and it is something that most teleoperated systems do not have at the moment.
I am learning about how a specific enzyme called biotin synthase reacts to changes in its structure and environment, and seeing if we can find any specific patterns that we can use to our advantage when engineering the enzyme to improve its function, and if we can use those patterns to help us re-engineer other enzymes.
I try to invent a “smart” knee implant, which would measure force and temperature in the knee joint. This would allow a doctor to track patient health after surgery.
