I started out completing an apprenticeship at GE Power Conversion where I helped design and build generators and motors for lots of different applications. After that I went to university to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering. My tutor during my degree was attempting to build an artificial brain which completely fascinated me!
This artificial brain is made from real brain cells but with a virtual environment that controls what the brain is seeing and reacting to.
My final year project and PhD has been working on finding a new way of detecting all the brain activity from every brain cell (neuron) in this artificial brain. I have been trying to do this with light and without using any dyes or methods that would damage the brain.
-
My Typical Day: I definitely don't have a typical day! Usually I am drinking coffee, checking on my cells, writing, then after dark starting my experiments.

What I'd do with the money
I would use 50% to fund STEM outreach in Nottinghamshire and the rest to organise the first 500 Women Scientists event in Nottingham

I am the coordinator for the Nottingham 500WS pod. We are still in our infancy and the money would be useful in organising some public engagement events around Nottingham to raise awareness and encourage more young women into STEM fields.
