It’s very challenging from an engineering view point, while being incredibly rewarding at a personal level.
The first time I tried a particular prototype knee on an amputee, he walked slowly to the other end of the corridor, then walked flat out back again. When I asked him how it felt, he had tears in his eyes as he told me it was the first time in fifteen years he’d been able to walk at different speeds!
Feedback doesn’t get better than that.
the advances that are being made with prosthetic limbs is absolutely incredible. they’re starting to be able to introduce “nerves” to them so the person can start to feel again.
Prosthesis are so cool because they allow people to get out of wheelchairs and perform tasks that would have been nearly impossible without them. It’s amazing to work on things like that which make sure a difference to peoples lives.
