Getting the brains to behave as I want them to. Surprisingly (or not?) brains don’t really like living outside of heads so it’s a challenge to keep them alive.
Part of doing a PhD is that you need to find something out that no one has found out before. Most of the time this is really exciting because its like being a detective, but sometimes its so frustrating because I have questions that seem really simple but no one can answer them because I’m the only one who has ever needed to know the answer!
At the moment, I am doing a lot of computer simulations using a programme that I am not very familiar with. I get stuck a lot and it’s quite frustrating.
But I do have a lot of colleagues that are always keen to help when I ask 🙂
The hardest part of my work is picking up and moving little crystals around without breaking them. They can be 0.000050m in length …. which is SUPER TINY.
Planning research inside a busy NHS hospital is the hardest part for me. Making sure the doctor, nurse, patient and engineer all turn up at the right time is surprisingly hard! You need good communication skills and to be very persuasive to make it happen!
