That sounds almost like a job interview question froggi – a very good one!
Hmm – wow, I really have to think on that one… I suppose if I had to show some proof that what I do is good, then all our happy clients and customers are the evidence!
I really enjoy learning from mistakes, as this is the best way to become an even better engineer. I suppose if I wanted to be perfect all the time, then I wouldn’t be pushing my own limits, and I’d then stay the same for many years!
Also I think differently to most other engineers! (The clue might be in my profile, there’s one question I didn’t answer in my “interview” 😉 ) – this difference in way of thinking helps me to use my imagination and figure out things better! A number of years ago, there was this out-of-this-world idea from a customer that baffled most of the other software engineers, but in the end I managed to nail it down and made it all work (I still have the thank-you email from the very-happy client!), and I reckon it is because of the way I think things, so therefore I’m good at what I do!

Some days I think I am good at my job, others I think maybe I’m not doing well at all. Everyone has moments when they don’t believe in themselves, especially when there are tight deadlines, work is stressful and it feels as though everything that could go wrong is going wrong!
One of my supervisors once said to me, ‘Don’t think of them as problems, think of them as challenges,’ and that really does help you see that you can overcome pretty much anything. One of my bosses was notoriously difficult about giving praise. A colleague said,’If you’re doing a good job, he won’t complement you, but he will renew your contract.’ I have had my contract renewed a number of times, so I can’t ask for more.

oo difficult question!
When I first started I was on a short term contract and when that got renewed every few months it was easy to know that my boss was pleased with me! At work we also have reviews so we get chance to go over how we are doing – and so far these have gone well.
Its also probably quite similar to what you will know from school – some days everything goes well and so you are confident in your work, and then other days it all goes wrong!

Hi Frogg – I tend to let other people decide if Im good at what I do. So for me the people that really matter are my peers in the industry, our clients and of course my work colleagues. If clients like you they want to do more projects with you and to be with you. I guess in the office you have close friends you really like to work with and you get to understand each others strengths – and weaknesses……Like so many things I think its usually possible to do the job better and things do go wrong. Sometimes you upset people or make a mistake or misunderstand a situation. But usually you can figure out how to fix the problem. A lot of these things for me are about being good at the job.

Some days better than others. I have got on with my career reasonably well in short space of time and my bosses seem happy with what I do so I guess it can all be bad. Its all about taking on as many opportunities as you can and learning from mistakes. If you keep going with these two in mind you won’t go far wrong.
