• Question: is there any job openings in your work for younger people?

      Apparently there is a shortage of software engineers or system administrators with Linux skills, more school leavers with these skills are needed!

      Hi Coolkav – Yes.
      – we normally take on graduates in September and plan to take 4 structural engineers this year.
      – we have actually picked up work recently however and took on two last month. One from Cambridge Uni and the other from Leeds Uni.
      – we take work experience placements in the summer (up to 8 at staggered times)
      – we have a school engagement programme

      Hows that?

      On the whole, to get the most out of it, the best way is to do a degree and a doctorate. But there are companies out there that build satellites and stuff that don’t ask for PhDs – such as Atrium, Surrey Satellite Technology and the like. They pay better too, and have more benefits than academia (universities) but you’re a bit tied down on what you work on – it usually has to be profitable.

      You can also write to university departments of the companies suggested above and ask if they’ll let you come and do some work experience. Most places have policies in place for that and it means you can get involved without having to get all the qualifications. That gives you great experience for your CV and means that you can really see what it’s like and if it’s for you.

      Yep – Lotus F1 Team has a graduate program for university leavers. The team also takes younger students – for example a few students doing A-levels are taken on for short work experience placements.

      There are generally lots of Work Experience positions in the Automotive Industry and full-time jobs for younger people. I would get in touch with your most local company directly and see what they have to offer. Generally most of them will be quite receptive but you might have to call them a few times to get through to the right person. Be persistent.
