It depends what you would like to do really. If you want to manufacture or mend the cars then you need to be good with your hands, and at working methodically to make sure you put the bits together correctly! If you want to design the vehicles then you need to be good at using computers, using your own initiative, solving problems and an interest in your work…really all the same skills needed for any engineering job!
Patience is a good thing to have as cars can sometimes have personalities of their own! You have to remember that a modern car has a massive amount of technology packed into a very small box. This means that each part can have an impact on another part and then another and so on.
The complexity means that there are many different skills required depending on which area you would like to work in. The basics of an Engineering degree will give you a good starting point and combine this strong problem solving skills and you will be on your way. After that its up to you to decide which specialist area you would like to work in…
