I have an IT engineering background centered in Computing and Information Systems. Data Centers are supported by Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, additionally engineers that look after control systems like building management systems, power monitoring systems… All so that services to end customers (web sites, e-commerce providers, ATMs, schools) stay on and perform well.
My role is split between the IT side (computers and networks), and the buildings side (Mechanical and Electrical).
Both have major areas have different challenges, but its really useful to sometimes bring something from one side to the other that hasn’t been thought of before!
I am mainly a mechanical engineer for data centres, I work on the master planning for sites, the building cooling and ventilation systems and try to keep the energy use as low as possible.
I am a qualified electrical engineer, but my specific area of work is now in the project management of the data centres we build. Having an industrial electrical background allows me to understand how long things take to get done, and then experience on other systems and understanding how they work, means i have a good overall experience to be good at my job.
I am an electrical power engineer involved in building and designing electrical power systems. You would not happen to be a descendant of Michael Faraday would you? 🙂 (a little joke there 😀 )
