I think that there are different types of smart, I didn’t particularly enjoy academic work, but I knew I had to do it and understand it in order to do the job I wanted to do ie. Engineering. I would say I was more smart in the way I interact with people and how I organise things.
My kids think i am but not sure my colleagues would agree with that all of the time. I work with proffesors and Phd guys so am constantly in awe of the brain power of others. It is all relative though and sometimes they need help with what i consider to be relatively easy tasks. A lot of engineering is recognising where existing designs can be modified and used to do a job. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel all of the time and keeping things simple is a great way of ensuring reliability.
I think you have to be smart to some degree in order to be an engineer, but if you are very smart then this is better obviously. I do very exciting work and I think I do it well and I would not say I am not smart, but you have to be smart to work in space industry I guess :).
It depends what you mean by smart I suppose 🙂
To be an engineer in the RAF you kind of need to be a bit of everything so yes, good grades are a start but it also means being sensible, being able to think outside the box and also having common sense lol – I like to think I’ve got a fairly good balance of those!
