• Question: Do you travel a lot with your job?

      Hi there Duke! Great question, thanks for taking the time to ask it!

      As an Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Air Force we travel a lot. All our aircraft need to practice in different conditions so we are always prepared no matter where we need to go, and if the aircraft go – the engineers go with them!
      As a Chinook Helicopter Engineer we do hot weather and desert training in Jordan in the Middle East and in Arizona in the USA. We do all our really cold weather training in Norway and we practice landing on ships in the Mediterranean Sea. We have also been to Nepal to help after the recent earthquake and we were in Afghanistan for over 10 years!
      In the Royal Air Force I have also travelled a lot playing sport and have played football in France, Belgium, Germany, Holland and Cyprus.

      Hi

      I sometimes have to go on what we call factory acceptances. This will be at a suppliers factory. Often it is somewhere boring but we deal with one company in Venice so have been there a few times, another in Denmark and i used to visit one in Germany. I have also been to Japan on a collaboration experiment and been to conferences in USA.

      Hi,
      It depends what job I am doing and what project I am working on. I have done a few visits to supplier’s factories and I have also had the opportunity to travel to do testing.
      However, my favourite trip was to Brazil to meet the Ford team out there who I was working on a project with, this was really important to align on key issues and push the project forward, however it was also a really great experience.
      If the opportunity to travel is important to you then engineering can be a great career for that, however it does depend on the role you are doing. Having said that if you do not want to travel that is ok too, for me I like the odd trip now and again but I don’t like to be away from home for too long.

      If I do travel with my job, then it is domestic. Usually, meetings that require 2hr drive one way, but I am treated with free food on arrival so this is fun 😉

      Dear Duke and 907kvnc34,
      I travel within England at least once a week for site visits. Sites could be at a beach, near a river and offices. Engineering is a great career because you can use your skills and you get travel. You can choose not to travel too. It depends on what works you do.
