Engineers are very unlikely to be faced with shortages of jobs in the future. We are not producing anywhere near the numbers we need every year. I think this is because the proffesion is often viewed as being poorly paid and old fashioned. Also it is one of the more challenging degrees to pass and needs a high level of committment.
The reality is that you can earn good money doing it and have a very enjoyable and rewarding career. I think the public image of engineering is starting to shift away from the stereo types but the use of the term ‘engineer’ has been used wrongly over the years to describe jobs that are not really engineering.. Domestic engineer for example….
First of all, engineering is viewed as a career where a lot of thinking is required. This is a job of responsibility and influencing the future lives and technology. You could be a part of it. To show this the best example is to run a project in which you would be an engineer. You would see for yourself and that is how I want to spend the money from here if I win.
Firstly I would say that a young person should choose the career path that is best for them – if they are not going to enjoy it then I would not want to set them up to be disappointed!
However, if someone would make a great engineer I would say firstly that as an engineer you will almost never be out of work! In many professions it is hard to get a job but not in engineering, in fact over the next 10 years the UK needs to double the number of engineers we currently have – so if you choose engineering you will certainly be in demand!
Secondly, I would say that engineering is a great career because it is so diverse, there is a job to suit almost everyone whether you are very academic, very hands-on, or if (like me) you really enjoy interacting with people and managing projects.
Finally engineering is a great choice simply because it is fun! You are going to be working for a long time and if you don’t enjoy what you do it could be tough going, by choosing a fun job, like engineering, it is really enjoyable and less like work!
