Hi
I have interviewed lots of prospective engineers and the one thing i look for is enthusiasm. If you are really enthusiastic and want to do something well then eventually you will! You also need an interest in how things work and need to be reasonably good with your hands but most things can be learned if you want them enough.
For me the most important thing has been a willingness to learn and to just “have a go”. Engineering is such a diverse career, there are so many things you could end up doing that often when you start a job you don’t know much about it, the ability to learn and pick things up, be it a new computer program or a new product, is key.
Dear dancer2002 and Holly,
Persevere – Continue doing something what you strongly believe in even though there are obstacles, discouragements and difficulties along the way.
The most important skills are: enthusiasm for problem solving and learning. This would be the most important! Once, you have this then you have everything!
