Well, there are plenty of routes. The most common would be at least Bachelors of Engineering. There are various types of courses ranging from buildings through mechanical (cars) to aerospace. However, there are such routes as engineer by training which is starting a 4-year apprentice placement just with A-Levels or even GCSE’s and working your way through to become an engineer.

This depends on what level you want to reach. A technician that does a lot of the day to day work needs some kind off apprenticeship and relevant qual. An engineer or designer normlly needs a degree or loads of experience plus the relevant skills in Computer aided design or a software language.

As Norbert and Simon have said there are various routes into engineering which require different qualifications. However I would say that if you are looking to go the university route you should certainly be looking at Maths at A Level with a science (normally physics, but possibly chemistry if you want to do chemical engineering).
However it is also worth doing subjects which you enjoy, for example I did DT for as long as possible just because I loved it!
