I deal in logic control so i have to be able to think in logical sequences. I need to be organised and be able to divide my time and attention up between many different projects as my team provide solutions for multiple applications that are all running at once. We have to be able to respond to issues as they crop up fast which often means dropping the development task we are doing, getting over to where the problem is, diagnosing it quickly and sorting it out. To do this we use a kind of programming logic written on a laptop and transfered to the controller on the equipment. We have had to learn how to use this and many other different bits of software. We also have to have a good knowledge of how electrical circuits work and how to fault find and fix issues.
In my area of engineering there are two major skills required, 1) communication skills 2) technical understanding.
A lot of what I do requires me to work with other people, to understand their point of view and to explain mine and direct teams to resolve issues so good communication skills are vital.
I am also an engineer working on engineering problems such as design and manufacturing so I need to have enough technical knowledge to understand problems in order to fix them.
I deal with analysis and simulation of space structures. In this field, scientific programming is very useful to create programs for analysis. Excellent numerical skills are rather necessary in my case as a calculate a lot. Also, knowledge of a designing software is very handful. In addition, knowing space environment is a great skill. Moreover, if you know a software like ANSYS it will be useful for thermal and material analysis. All the above skills will land you a good job.
