I have a permanent desk in my office however we have lots of projects going on throughout the UK and sometimes we are needed to point things out in person.
Also our client (the government) regularly wants to see us for updates on how much we are spending through to how near to being finished a job we are.
Travelling as an engineer is great as it allows you to meet different people, great cities and try lots of different food.. Oh and we get paid for it too to buy nice clothes whilst out and about 🙂
I’m based in the factory for most of the time.
I go and visit suppliers and I go to trade exhibitions. I normally do 4 or 5 trips a year and I love seeing other factories, it was really exciting to see casting in Poland because there was molten metal everywhere. The furthest I have been is Taiwan, to work with a supplier there.
I’ve current got my permanent desk in another company’s office! This is because we are doing a ‘Joint Venture’ and our companies are collaborating on our project, so we are all based in the same office.
I travel around London to go to meetings and site visits quite a lot at the moment.
I was offered a chance to work in Doha (Qatar) last year, but I turned it down as I didn’t want to be based out there for a long period of time. I know that if in the future I want to work somewhere else in the world, the opportunity will always be there if I am open minded about what projects I want to work on.
