I actually had this situation once, sort of. I spent a while working in Production Improvements, which was much more of a business role than an engineering role. I turned out to be good at it but it was very stressful, difficult environment. People worried about money and deadlines so much and would be shouty with each other when things went wrong. Engineering isn’t about blaming people like that, it’s about solving problems.
So, they promoted me but I realised I wasn’t having any fun. I resigned and took a pay cut to go back into a design engineering job somewhere else. It was a very good choice for me. I would do exactly the same again.
You will spend most of your adult life at work or asleep. I think you have to have fun at work, otherwise no amount of money is worth it.
