• Question: Are engineers fairly represented in the media or is it different in real life?

      Interesting question! I don’t actually see much of engineers in the media – it seems to be mostly politicians at the moment! I think that whenever I see engineers in the news, it seems to be they are in a technical role being interviewed in a factory or fixing something. Although this is what some engineers do, there doesn’t seem to be much shown about the design work which goes on behind the scenes.

      As Matt said, I don’t see engineers overly represented in the media. However, the project I currently work on (F-35B) is featured in the media quite a bit, but usually from an operational perspective.

      I think they are fairly represented in the media, Rolls Royce is based in an area where there is quite a bit of manufacturing. So we’re often in the media regardless of whether it’s good or bad news. The media might be reporting about our share price, of something we’ve achieved at an air-show or something one of the STEM ambassadors has done in a local school. Our media reports tend to be worldwide as we have sites all around the world so we will be fairly represented in the media compared to other areas.

      I don’t really see much of engineering in the media at all. The BBC have been getting much better at putting engineering into programs, with documentaries about factories and the way big engineering is achieved. The BBC news tends to get some good info from the business side. That being said there isn’t much about what engineers *actually* do on a day to day basis, and that needs to get better.

      I feel like there is still work to do on representing engineers in the media . However , online i have noticed there is more engineers being recognised and acknowledged for their efforts.

    This is exactly what this event can help with! Not every engineer wears a reflective vest and a hard hat and builds planes!
