I think the most challenging presentation and report I’ve had to complete was in support of the Flight Trials of the F-35B aboard the Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier. This was the first time that the aircraft had operated in this environment, therefore I had to use a lot of simulated data to make engineering decisions on what was considered a safe envelope for the aircraft to operate in. This was all presented during a clearance conference, which was attended by senior management from the UK and the USA organisations.
The first time I presented my research at a conference! This was fairly soon after I’d started my PhD so hadn’t collected that much data, or learnt very much about the project at that point. For the conference, I had to write a technical report and then present my findings to about 40 people for 20 mins.
I think explaining the end to end process of what BT tower does and going into detail on how Tv programs get from the camera onto your screen is one of the hardest presentations i have given. This is due to there being so many elements involved and giving it to people who work in the industry as i didnt want to get any information wrong as they would be able to tell!
Probably my Final year project at university. I had to present my project and report to a group of experts. They were super nice because they had seen that I had put in effort, and made something interesting, so that helped. I think it always helps to be passionate about the things you are talking about as well, and it really comes across. My project was to make a robot that went and collected things for you, and in the end it worked better than expected, and it came across in the presentation.
Last year, I was invited back to my old school to take part in a business enterprise and careers day. The first part of the day involved meeting the students and advising them on a business task that they had been set for example setting up and running an event in the town. The afternoon involved giving them a presentation about Rolls-Royce plc, my job and the careers available to them. Writing it was a challenge as it had to be aimed at the correct level, not too long and adding youtube films. I then had to present a couple of times to a room full of students using projection equipment that I was not familiar with.
