Great work on getting involved in engineering maintenance already! Whilst planes and bikes are very different machines, there are a lot of logical thinking skills you will have learned whilst fixing your bike that will help if you decide to work in aircraft maintenance. Personally, I think the best route into this is through an apprenticeship, it will give you hands on experience at the same time as gaining qualifications and you also get paid to do it!! There are lots of companies that offer apprenticeships and it depends on where you live in the country as to which ones are available for you – I’d suggest looking at which companies operate at local airfields/airports and contact them directly.
Also look out for young apprenticeship schemes, which is also a way into a company starting at a younger age. Global companies such as Rolls-Royce plc and BAE systems run apprenticeship schemes which last either two or three years. During the scheme, you go on an outward bound course, study drawing and design make, spend a day a week at college. After the first year, you go on rotation around the company spending approximately 12 weeks in each project or area, depending on whether you’re a technical or engineering. Have a look at the company websites and search for careers/apprenticeships. Also see if you can get into one of the companies for your work experience week.
