      For me, I did two internships between the 2nd & 3rd and 3rd & 4th years of my degree. The first one was research based at the University of Birmingham which I loved and the second was with Rolls Royce in Derby. I enjoyed the first one more than the second, so that definitely influenced my decision to work in research at University, rather than for a company. Having some research experience also helped get me on to a PhD too.

      Whilst completing my apprenticeship, I worked on 2 placements in the military aviation world, which helped me to decide to enter that area once qualified. Since then, I have spent 7 years working on military aircraft in various different roles.

      My past job experiences which have helped me get to the position I have today is working within the different projects, firstly as a secretary then moving onto be an engineer. Also the experience from the voluntary work that I’m involved with as this includes tasks such as planning, costing and hosting. Being able to chat to different people of all ages and working together as a team also helps. Work experience for a job doesn’t necessarily have to be in the area you would like to work in, working in different areas can also help as you skills are transferrable.

      I worked in retail prior to engineering so i didnt have any engineering experience.

      I was lucky to have a great placement year with an electronic design house in Bristol called Cubik Innovation. I would recommend it to anyone interested in electronics, as while I was there everything just clicked, and things made sense. I now love electronics and even do it in my spare time at home. It really benefited my final year project at university, which ended up helping me get this job I have today.
