Pensions are an interesting topic – I signed up for mine when I was 19, and at that point (and even now) retirement is a long way off! Each company offers different types of pension and all options are worth looking into to see which is best for you. I’d definitely recommend having one though!

I have a private and company pension, which I contribute to on a monthly basis , which I started when I was much younger. However how much both pensions are worth will depend on my final salary and when I retire.

My pension comes out my monthly wage before tax and is only a small portion of my wage. I did have thoughts of cancelling it because i am still young but it will be deffo worth it in the long run .

I get the civil service pension (which is quite good), basically it is a small amount that comes out of your pay each month. It is important because it means you have money to fall back on when you are older and retired. You don’t tend to notice it either.

As a PhD student, I don’t actually have a pension set up yet. However, the maximum you can pay into a pension is 6% of your monthly salary.
