That’s actually a really complicated bit of engineering and not one that I personally work on so I can’t talk about the specifics. The prosthetic limbs that are controlled by the brain have mini computers in them with sensors so they can detect what the nerves in the body are trying to do. When someone loses a leg, sometimes they have lots of nerves which are still quite healthy and in the right place. Other times they’re not so the amputee may need additional surgery to allow for the sensors in the prosthetic limb to detect what they’re trying to do. Then when you put the limb on, it sort of completed the pathway from the brain, through the nerves to the limb so that it can be controlled by the brain.

I hope that makes sense, if not tell me and I’ll try and explain a different way! 🙂
