Doing engineering research is really my dream job, though I didn’t know it when I was younger! I love having my own research to do every day. It’s like baking a cake, it takes time, attention, and care and (can be frustrating if you mess up) but at the end of the day, it’s something that you made, something your own. When I’m not a PhD student anymore, I hope to still do research and create new ideas and see them be turned into real products.
Engineering is my dream ‘career’, I can’t imagine doing anything else. If I’m honest, I think I’m not quite there yet with the dream job, but there are so many options with engineering, that you really can take it wherever you want to 🙂
The thing is, almost everyone doesn’t have their dream job, but they’re perfectly happy despite it. You can either try and find your dream job and spend a lot of time looking for something that might not exist, or you can keep following your interests and end up in a job which you never imagined but which is actually perfect for you. There are so many jobs out there which you’ve never even heard of – it’s very unlikely that your dream job is actually the job you’d be best off doing.
Keep following your interests and abilities and you’ll end up in the best place.
