• Question: How long did it take to study to become the engineer you are today?

      It’s taken me 4 years.

      I did a degree in Computing and Electronics engineering, which is a mixture of computer science + programming with electronics and looking a circuit design. So this was perfect start for robots.

      This is because the programming is how the robot can think and decide what to do. It can be used to make plans or decisions.
      The electronics and circuitry is like the nerves of the robot and they allow the robot to use it’s parts like motors, lights, sensors etc…

      So now I’m officially an engineer as I have a degree, but I think being and engineer is more of a state of mind. It’s being interested in building things, or how they work, or fixing things. This include code, electronics, mechanical parts, what ever you like.

      I worked as an engineer before I graduated and I worked with lots of engineers that didn’t have a degree. Getting a degree was the just the easiest and best option for me as I wanted to become an academic. (A teacher in a university).

      But! I’m still studying, I am studying for 4 more years so that I will become a doctor (not the type that cures people’s disease, the science kind) but it also gives me the opportunity to learn more and work on a project of my choice for a while.

      I’ve converted from being a mathematician to being an engineer in just over a year. Doing a Masters or a PhD degree is a good way to convert your current knowledge to a new application.

      For me it was overall 5 years – 3 years Bachelor degree and then 2 years Master degree. Some of my friends they did just 3 years of Bachelor and they started working as Engineers. I guess there is many ways and routes to take to became an engineer but the fact is that good education opens more doors.

      I did my undergraduate in computer science. and then I came to UK to do a masters in information security and biometrics. Then, one day my supervisor asked me if I want to do a PhD in robotics, and I said “yes” straight away.
