      It depends.

It can take a few weeks, and students at universities will plan, design, build and tests robots in less than 3 months.

However complex robots can take years to go through all of the steps.

The NASA robot some of my friends are working with was built in 2015 by NASA. But there are still scientists and engineers still working on it so that it can be sent to Mars. So although the physical part of the robot has been built, engineers all over the world are still building the software which will allow it to work alongside people. http://valkyrie.inf.ed.ac.uk/

Once a robot has been built, other engineers will use it and build more software for it. So that it can be used to do many different experiment or uses.

My project this summer, is to either build a new robot from scratch or take someone else’s plans and improve on them. I decided to take someone else’s design and improve on it, as it means I will have more time to run experiments and build software if I use something that someone else has already done 🙂

Something very simple may take a few hours, if you have components in place. Lego Mindstorm is a good example of this.

Something more complex can take days and weeks. I’ve seen a robotic lamp that would let you know when you need to take a rest from work, and offer you some water, being built in weeks.

Robots that we send in space, like Mars explorers, or those that help on the International Space Station took years of research, planning, design, engineering and testing to become good enough.

So, it all depends on the scale 🙂

It depends on the robot you want to build, how advanced you want the robot to be, or what do you want it to do. It can take from probably a few days to years, as you have to design it, build it, and test it.
