I have fixed my motorbike quite a few times but unfortunately it is not easy to fix your car if you don’t have a proper tools. But my engineering knowledge definitely helps to read some electric schematics when your radio stops working !
Katie- that is amazing. Even though it was a mini, I didn’t expect anyone to fix something like that. Well done. I really want to do something like that in the future
I’d really recommend it Raechelle. I learned so much – how the engine worked, how all the electrics connected to each other. Working with an old car is great, the technology is all quite simple, so you can get your head around it, even if (like me at the time) you’ve never done anything like it before.
I ordered a Haynes manual and some other books online and just got to work. I found all my parts on ebay and at scapheaps, so it doesn’t have to be expensive.
If you don’t fancy doing it by yourself, there are always local car clubs that will be happy to show you the basics and let you have a go. If you are thinking of university, that’s also something you can get into there as there is usually a motor club or society – if not you could start your own!
@annacupcake101 – that sounds great, are you going to help him? My advice would be to get stuck in and go for it – you’ll never learn if you don’t give it a go. Oh and label all the screws, nuts and washers if you are taking it apart… I always end up with with a few leftovers :/
@Chloe & Maria – I’m 27 and have been working as an engineer for just over 5 years. I love my job, so luckily most of it is quite exciting. The only boring bits is I have to spend a couple of days a month sorting out all the paperwork to keep track of all the sales. I don’t like sitting still at my desk!

As part of my job, thousands and thousands! We have factories that can make a car every 2 minutes.
Outside of work, I had an old mini that I restored piece by piece. It took over 2 years but was so much fun.
