Wow what a question – that’s going to make me think a bit.
I work on putting together the metal shell of a car with robots. That usually has about 1,000 different metal panels that are joined together using welds, glue or rivets. If a car is made of Aluminium it will have up to 5,000 rivets to join all the panels together.
After this there are all the drivetrain parts (engine, gearbox etc. ) that are also made up of thousands of smaller parts.
Then you have all the ‘trim’ – the bits that bolt onto the inside of the car like the seats, plastic panels, speakers, steering wheel, radio etc.
I have to admit I had to have a little look on google to see what all of those parts add up to! The general thinking seems to be a car is made up of between 25,000 – 30,000 different parts. Even I wouldn’t have guessed it was that many!
