• Question: How much money do you get and what do you do with it

      As I am doing my PhD and I am on scholarship, I cannot say that I earn loads of money. But it is satisfying knowing that when I finish I will be able to get a very good job in either industry or academia.

      What do I do with the money? Well, pay rent, pay bills, and travel.

      Dear 547rbth49,

      I get a grant from the EPSRC which comes to £14,000 every year.

      Compared to an engineering job, it’s not very much, however it’s more than enough to live on comfortably.

      I spend my money on boring things like food, rent and bills, but I also have two cats who need food and toys.

      I spend a lot of my money on cool technology, I bought a phone and a smart watch, and I also like to buy electronics parts so that I can build things at home.

      I made my brother his birthday present, it was a night light that shines the stars onto his walls, which he had wanted for a while.

      The car industry is quite well paid for engineering.

      As a new graduate with a good degree you can expect to find a job that pays around £25,000 – £30,000. If you do well, the pay rises are good as you gain experience quickly. With a few years experience under your belt you could be looking at a salary of £40,000 +

      I like to spend my money on go-karting, games and travelling the world. I think it’s great to get out and about and do things that scare me a bit!

      Once I finish my PhD, it’s gonna be ~£25,000 per year or so.

      I live a very monastic lifestyle, so most of the money goes for rent, food, and bills. I save up a bit for travel. The rest are waiting to be spent on something grandiose 🙂
