You don’t have to be of a certain age. You can become an engineer whenever you want. You can start wanting to be an engineer from young and working towards that during school.

You can start informally from any age, simply by reading around about what happens in engineering, and tinkering with things. The early the better, to be honest, as you’ll have more time to decide which type of engineer you want to be, and collect some experience in that field.

Once you figured that out, you can apply for a university degree in that kind of engineering (and that would qualify you as an engineer once you are done). So, if you want to choose this route, you’d be 18 by the time you start Uni and about 20-21 when you finish.

Alternatively, if you can go straight into working for a engineering company (you’ll be called an engineer in your job). You’ll start as an engineer the moment you have accepted your job offer (so, also probably at the age of 18).

The important thing is to have the passion and some practical hands-on experience in what you want to do. I found that most valuable throughout my studies and work.

There isn’t an age limit to becoming an engineer. 🙂

I think engineering is a state of mind. The only think you need is to be curious.

Everything else you can learn, like how to solve problems, what materials are best to use, how to design, how to build, all of these things can be taught.

Most people call themselves an engineer once they have started university or an apprenticeship scheme, but as soon as you become interested in engineering and trying to think about it, then I think you can call yourself and engineer too 🙂
