Oh, I must have been around 23. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do for a long time 🙂

I am not sure, I don’t think I ever really knew what an Engineer was when I was at secondary school. I knew what the word meant but not what an engineer really did. I went through school and 6th form studying the subjects that I was good at and most importantly enjoyed.

My first opportunity to study engineering as a subject was university so I guess that’s when I decided I wanted to be an engineer. But I didn’t start my first Engineering job until I was 25.

I wanted to be an engineer for as long as I can remember. When I was little I loved cars & motorsport and always wanted to become a car designer.

It’s funny because although I wanted to become an engineer, I didn’t realize how many different types of engineer there were until I started my first job when I was 18.

I decided when I was 24 I didn’t want to be a design engineer after all and switched to working as an engineer in factories with robots. I still work with cars, but it’s a very different job.

I think the important thing is to concentrate on the subjects you enjoy and when you are ready to start work you can find a job that matches with those. There are so many options and always remember it’s ok to change your mind!

I think I decided when I was 16. I was always top of my class for math and sciences, and I always knew I had to choose something that will allow me to develop things.

      Dear Tilda,

      I didn’t know for sure until I was 21!

I always considered it a possibility because my dad was an engineer, I loved maths and physics in school and I really loved to solve puzzles and build things.

However after school I tried to become a musician and it wasn’t until I was 21 that I realised I’d much rather study engineering.

So don’t be worried if you don’t know yet what you want to be. I have lots of friends who are older than 25 who still don’t know.
I think I decided to be an engineer after watching lots of science fiction, but I just didn’t realise it yet. I would recommend keeping your subject choices at school as broad as possible to keep all your options open 🙂

      Hope this helps,
      Siobhan
