• Question: My Brother is studying in engineering, what advice would you give him???

      This is a good question.

      Engineering is not the easiest subject, in fact sometimes it seems almost impossible, but its worth it. Once you discover how things work, or how you can make things work it becomes the best subject ever.

      There are many types of engineering, from bridges to engines to robots and many more. My first bit of advice is to have an idea what type of engineering he would like to do, but remember you can always change your mind. This will help him focus on what he would like to study more of. My next bit of advice would be to always ask why and don’t be afraid of asking a “stupid question” because the art of engineering come from understanding how and why things work or even why a problem needs solving.

      My final bit of advice is enjoy it, Engineering is really rewarding and enjoyable especially when you able to fix or solve problems.

      I agree with Ollie on that your brother should decide on the strand of engineering he wants to pursue and focus on it. Specialising helps a lot!

      I’d say: don’t wait until you finished you studies, start creating/working towards something now! I am amazed how few people actually do practical work, take placements or start creating their portfolio.

      Engineering is a very broad area. My advice is to find out which one is more suitable for him and which one he enjoys the most. He wouldn’t want to be stuck in a subject that does not bring him any satisfaction.

      Never give up and remember that persistence is a key! In my opinion the further you get the easier it is. I remember my first year was the hardest and the last year when I was doing my project was the easiest and most enjoyable.

      Studying engineering can be tough and requires a lot of hard work.

      My advice would be to stick at it and always remember that often the best solutions to problems are the most simple ones.

      It’s also important to get some real life experience. So if he can get some work experience, even if it’s just for a day that can really help you decide what type of engineering is your favourite.
