  I don’t use circuit boards at work, but when I was at school one of my favourite activities was soldering together circuits in electronics club.
  
  It was great, I made a lie detector, a decision maker and wonkey wire buzzer game.

  At the moment I am going to replicate a circuit board designed by a academic at Manchester University. The have made all of their hardware and software opensource, which means that anyone can borrow the plans and build it for themselves, as long as you don’t pretend the design was yours.
  
  In the past I have used a mixture of other people’s designs and my own.
  
  One of my favorite assignments in my undergraduate degree was programming a PIC microcontroller in Assembler code! Our teacher made us do this as the assembly language is the closest thing to machine language and he wanted us to better understand how a computer works.
  
  An other fun assignment was designing a circuit board in a computer language called Verilog. This language allows you to design circuit boards and we used it to design a CPU (which is the brains of your computer).
  
  If these things sound fun, I studied electronics engineering at University, from your question and from your other about the Alexa, it sounds like you would really enjoy studying electronics engineering, or computer engineering.
