I am a safety engineer working for Military Projects within the Ministry of Defence (MOD), I work for a company called Osprey Consulting Services. Osprey is an Engineering Consultancy which provides engineering advice and support to customers (both military and civilian). Usually these customers are short of the engineering expertise to deliver their projects so require a company like mine to assist them.
I am a safety engineer which means I help my customers to understand the safety risks associated with design decisions (whilst in the design and manufacture stage of a project) and when the equipment is ‘In-Service’ I help to monitor failures, accidents, incidents and suggest ways in which the risks could be reduced.
I am also Business Area Manager for Osprey which means I am also responsible for developing the business, this usually involves drinking lots of coffee with potential clients to understand their problems and how Osprey may assist them.

My Typical Day: Helping to make military aircraft safe to fly by analyzing safety risks

I have no fixed place of work, I have an office in Bristol but I’m rarely in as I’m either at a Clients place of work or working from home. A typical day involves switching on my computer and see what emails have come in and which ones need responding to quickly. A lot of my time involves visiting the aircraft and the design organisations to advise on safety issues with the clients solutions. It also involves a lot of time in meeting rooms in contractual discussions with clients.

What I'd do with the money
Invest it in projects and resources to help communicate engineering to schools

I have yet to decide what to spend the money on, but I would like to buy some materials to construct a rig to fire paper rockets (Air compressor, wood, valve etc) to do more STEM projects with Schools. I would also like to try an encourage more girls into STEM related careers ( I have 2 daughters!), so perhaps I would use the money to create a project which appealed to girls.
