I originally studied Mechanical Engineering at university because it is generally considered one of the broadest disciplines (i.e. you can pursue a very wide range of careers after graduation!).
I then saw an advert through University for a summer placement with a company that was involved in the subsea business, within the oil and gas industry, and I thought “I can do that!”. I really liked the work and the people there, so I accepted an offer to start as a graduate the next year!
So I started with studying mechanical engineering and found myself in my specific area by following opportunities that were presented to me. However, I have an interest in the energy sector generally (e.g.nuclear, renewables, oil and gas), so I think that would have been the specific areas that I would have eventually gone for, if the opportunity hadn’t presented itself.
I specialised with my degree and chose civil engineering, but then within that I have studies lots of different sub-topics and have yet to decide which one I want to fully specialise in.
