Question: Did you have any big goals you wanted to achieve when you started out as an engineer, if so explain what they were and whether you have accomplished them?
My goals were to be respected as a Subject Matter Expert in my field of systems engineering, which I think I have achieved, but it depends on who you ask 😉
My other goal was to be in a job I enjoyed, which I have achieved, but a lot of that comes from interesting work and being appreciated for the work you do.
Hmm, good question! I think there were two short/medium term big goals that I wanted to achieve when I first started engineering.
The first was to become a chartered engineer. This is what most engineers try to aspire to, and it is a recognition of technical qualifications and certain professional “competencies”. These competencies include things like showing problem solving ability, showing that you can lead, showing that you can communicate effectively, and showing that you are contributing to society/the environment. This is a work in progress! I intend to apply for my interview (the final assessment) later this years.
The second was to become a STEM ambassador. I think it’s really important to try and get more of the next generation interested in engineering! Engineers are in great demand in the UK.. and that demand is set to grow in the future! This is a goal I have achieved – I’ve been a STEM ambassador for around 3 years now.
Getting chartered is my main goal at the moment, as it show’s I am professionally qualified as an engineer. Then longer term I think I want to start my own consulting business, focussing on sustainability in design.
