Question: Hi, me again... from Loreto! :D
I just wanted to ask how you adapt to changes in engineering when things like technology are making it difficult to pinpoint problems? just checking....
I think technology is helping me a lot in my job and pinpointing problems more accurately.
However, adapting to change is all part of being an engineer – and partly why it is such a great job. You never know what the day may bring, or what challenges you may have to face. So being flexible and creative are essetial skills.
Like Philippa, I think that changes in technology are actually making pinpointing problems easier :D!
In my industry, one example are ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). An ROV is essentially an expensive but very useful robot that is controlled by a joystick. The person controlling the joystick is called a pilot – just like the ones that fly planes! The pilot sits on a boat and performs underwater missions with the ROV, using cameras to see what he is doing.
This way, the ROV can check out certain area of concern, and pinpoint problems! 🙂
Another example is an “accelerometer”, which is a small piece of technology that you can place on objects to work out how they are moving in three dimensions (forwards/backwards, left/right, up/down). This is very useful tool to have, as you can work out if things are moving as expected hundreds of meters underwater – and hence “pinpoint the problem”!
