I think using technology is the future of engineering. We are already looking at using 3D computer models to design things, and I dream of the day when we can do engineering design like Tony Stark in Iron Man!

For my job, the use of sensors within bridges is starting to be used which helps us to manage them better. It gives us real time updates about the bridge, and so we can measure how it is performing and make repairs more effectively.

      Hi Grace!

Great question! I can think of three things that I can foresee helping engineering improve in the future:

      1) Embracing technology – I think that continuing to ensure that new technology is always in the minds of engineers will be vital. Inventions such as the 3D printer, have made great things possible (e.g. custom making prosthetics, or bones!).

      2) Widening the net – I think that we need to address the gender balance by encouraging more female engineers. This will help the workforce be more diverse (and help boost creativity) and will help us find the engineers we will need as a country going forward.

      3) More STEM in schools (epecially engineering)- Again, this will help the UK meet its demand for engineers.

      Hope this helps!
