Being a safety engineer, I would like to think my work always does good. My job as a safety engineer is try to make sure the design and use of equipment is safe for the people that will use and be affected by the equipment (included you and I).

As you can imagine with aircraft safety its important to ensure the deign is safe to prevent aircraft falling out the sky!

Depending where you live, my engineering (or at least some of the engineers I work with) may have had a direct impact on you. I work within our highways business and we help maintain a large number of roads around the country. This includes filling in pot holes as well designing repair work to ensure bridges can keep carrying all the cars that drive over them.

Our aim is to ensure roads remain safe and reliable for everyone who uses them.

      Hi Megan!

The engineering that myself and my colleagues carry out ensures that subsea pipelines carrying oil and gas are safe, which is essential. The safety aspect is especially important for those working offshore on oilrigs.

Additionally, while we will hopefully move to a more balanced energy mix in the future (e.g. including more renewable energy), for now we are reliant on oil and gas for many things (petrol, heating, plastics etc.) – so if the supply suddenly stopped , it wouldn’t take very long for the country to grind to a halt!
