I think focusing on salary doesn’t accurately portray why you would want to go into engineering so I’m not a big fan on talking about it.

I think the key here is that engineering is something I would do for free, no financial compensation at all due to my passion for it. This is something I enjoy doing on the weekend too!

To answer your question absolutely, my salary is around 50k a year but engineers working in the same space as me can earn upwards of 90k a year.

I earn enough to live comfortably, which I feel fortunate for. In general, engineers make a good living – which I feel is probably justified based on the responsibility that an engineering role involves.

OK I’m going to answer this one directly as I think it gives you guys an idea of the type of salary, you might expect if you followed a career in engineering but its so dependent on experience and the industry.

Your qualifications count for a lot in the MOD, I am also chartered engineer and I also do a fair but of business management for my company so it might not accurately reflect the salary of an out and out engineer. Someone with my equivalent experience and qualifications could earn between £50,000 and £60,000 per year.

Agree that salary isn’t everything, but I think the engineering profession is paid plenty – not as much as a professional footballer, but enough to live a reasonable lifestyle.

As I am fairly new to engineering I looked up the starting salaries for graduate engineers. The average salary for an engineering graduate is £25,000. However, there is some variation in that depending on what size company you work for and also your discipline of engineering.
