Good question! I think a couple stand out for me. The first one was a site visit to a fabrication yard to see an oil rig in the process of being built. It made me appreciate the scale of the structure involved, and let me see some things in real life that I usually only see on a screen in the office!
The second was a really fun one – and it was when I learned to scuba dive! Some of the tasks in the subsea industry industry involve the use of human divers in some way. They sometimes need to help connect or repair pipes underwater, for example. Learning to scuba dive really gave me an appreciation of the sorts of things that divers have to consider, and made me more aware when divers ever became part of a proposed solution to a problem.
