You might think that I’m dodging the question here, but I genuinely think that every area of engineering has the potential to be the most useful in its own way.
For example, the engineering in Oil and Gas, Nuclear and Renewable industries is vital for providing the world with the energy it needs and to increase standards of living. The engineering in Civil disciplines (roads, dams, bridges) is vital for creating and maintaining infrastructure. The engineering in aviation is vital for ensuring that the risks of flying are kept acceptably low. The list could go on for a long time!
We rely on engineers from such a diverse range of industries that I think it’s impossible to pick just one as the most useful!
… Actually, forget all that – engineers in the energy sector are most useful!
I think the most useful area is a combined aspect of all types of engineering. My work involves combining technology with existing roads to make them run more smoothly and are safer for people.
However, I think if were to really go back to basics, then civil engineers who ensure we have access to clean drinking water would be pretty essential!
