Tough question! If it has to be a technical ability, I would say it was problem solving – and in particular, applying different approaches to solve problems.
I really enjoy discovering new methods to solve problems, and I try to learn as much as I can from other engineers in the teams that I find myself in. Because of this, I’ve often been able to use a skill I’ve picked up in the past from another team to solve a problem in the present.
Hmm that’s a difficult one. I would say all of my skills are interconnected. I refer to them as my toolbox of skills and different problems require me to use different tools in which to solve a problem. So my ability to manipulate numbers is one skill, but also understanding the relationship between factors so that I can work out unknowns.
My greatest skills then, perhaps, is my creativity. Knowing how to use my different skills in a mixture of ways to achieve my answer.
Good question, but I think I would struggle to pick a single technical skill. My strengths in my job are more like the ability to explain things simply and to provide a short and simple way of explaining complex problems. I also like to innovate (try new things) so I guess my ability to see good practice and ways of doing things in other areas and apply them to brand new areas!
