The first thing I did as an engineer was some detective work! Along with a more senior engineer, I had to figure out why a subsea pipeline, which was believed to be out-of-service (i.e. no longer carrying gas), had slowly become pressurised over the period of around 10 years. We had to figure out why this had happened, how much gas we expected to be in the pipe, and then recommend how the pressure could be safely removed from the pipe, without endangering people or the environment.
It was a really interesting first project to have!
My first job was in flood management, so using a specialist software I modelled how a river might flood a town and then helped other (more experienced engineers) design flood defences that would protect the town.
The first thing I did as an engineer was a hazard identification activity for bomb disposal robot. I can’t say much more without breaking the Official Secrets Act. One of the most interesting projects I have been involved with and it was a real eye opener!
