0 Question: why are they called pot holes? Keywords: hole, pot Asked by kamelia to Philippa on 17 Mar 2015.
Philippa Jefferis answered on 17 Mar 2015:
Good question! I had to ask and there are conflicting arguments.
Some say that when we used to have dirt tracks and wagons, potters would dig into the ruts formed by the way on wheels to get to the clay underneath.
Others say that it is because it resembles a cooking pot. Or that the Old English word “pot” meant “a deep hole”
Will let you decide which one you think is more likely.
