Very! I am part of something called Molecular-Scale Engineering, it’s kind of nanotechnology. It has bits of chemistry, biology, physics and electrical engineering involved and some people throw in some biology too.
I have loved this overlap of different subjects but it’s a bit intimidating too, its hard not to feel like you don’t know anything! On the other hand, science in research is very different to how it was taught to me at school.
Hi izzyhx, science is important in my job, I need to understand material science for example the structures of materials and their properties. This is needed so I can figure out how to change the surface for the required product environment.
I think its massively important. Science tends to be the reason why things do or don’t work.
The more you understand about things the better you can engineer a product. For me understanding rudimentary physics helps with things like hydrodynamics, chemistry helps with thing like water repellency, I’ve even used a bit of biology when trying to squeeze swimmers in to shapes that are hydrodynamic!!
