There are many ways to become an engineer within the space industry. I chose an academic route and got A-level and then Masters Degree qualifications.
But that’s not the only way. There are vocational technical courses like HND’s for example. At SSTL we take on 10 to 20 apprentices each year and they will eventually be doing technical work or even engineering within the space industry.
To work at NPL you do not need a lot of qualifications, I think only a degree in a science or engineering subject. However, you gain more experience (and better pay) having more qualifications like a masters and PhD. Particularly if you want a career at a university in physics a PhD is expected.
It depends on what kind of engineering you want to do. For some fields a specific vocational qualification is more important than a university degree. I happen to have a lot of qualifications (through PhD), but I think for my current job, my years of experience matter more.
