No, not really. My PhD had some affect as it took up a lot of my time and was stressful at times. But science is just like any other job, though as it is also my passion I do sometimes find my partner and I having in depth physics discussions in the evening or weekend. I do not have children which is more of a commitment, but I know that these days there are several schemes to help you manage a career and children such as flexible hours or working one day a week less.
Since having children, I have taken more advantage of the accommodations offered by my work, including flexible hours and working from home. I don’t think either work or my family life suffer because of the other. I know I’m a lot more organised with my time and scheduling than I used to be before I had children, though!
Not really, it sort of does because I live a long way away from there I work; so I don’t see my boys for three nights a week.
But in general my job affects my family life less than most other jobs would because it is really flexible. I don’t have to work a “9 to 5” so I can mould work around my family life. (Like this week I’m working form home)
