Nope. On the contrary, my dad wanted me to go into medicine because I was good at science. I told him not to worry, as I would end up being a Doctor anyway, just not of medicine 🙂
I was always very good at music and it was probably my best subject at school. However, I was told by my parents that there aren’t any well paid jobs in music (I later found out that isn’t true).
I was also interested and quite good at maths and science and the mantra in my family was “Ian’s good at maths – he’s going to be an accountant”. I think it was the only job they could think of that involved counting!! Maths is more than counting!
My friend wanted to study electronics and so I found out about it and liked the idea. I always found engineering difficult and sometimes wished I’d stuck with music – which I found very easy. But in the end it has turned out to be a great career. I’ve travelled all over the world, done really exciting things and now I own and run my own company.
Reflecting back, music would have been fun for me too, but engineering is a really rewarding career choice.

Fortunately, no, my parents never pushed me onto any particular career path. I think they’re quite happy I am, though. 🙂
