Starting your own company requires a skill set I don’t (yet) have! Certainly I would want more direct management experience before doing that. I’d happily join a start-up to get that experience, but I wouldn’t try to start my own company from scratch just yet.
I have started a company. It takes a lot of effort – hard work, determination and good luck too. We’re now growing quickly and its great to be able to widen the range of projects that we’re doing and to help some new engineers to get started on their careers.
If when experimenting we find something really useful but that things isn’t really the core interest of the company (like we discover socks, but we build spacecraft), we can create something called a “spin off” company (so a new sock company is born for example).

Will I ever do that? I don’t know. It depends if I still want to build spacecraft or make socks.
